CHARITY GOLF CHALLENGE
FORTY YEARS AGO Archie Mackay, RWM
of Lodge St. Andrew (Denny & Loanhead) No. 176, completed a marathon
golf challenge playing 112 holes in one day at Glenbervie Golf Club.
Now he plans to attempt to repeat the feat with
the help of family and friends and is seeking support to raise funds for
Strathcarron Hospice.
In 1984 while deputy news editor of the Sunday
Mail he was joined by the Glenbervie professional at the time, George
McKay, and raised thousands of pounds for the paper’s Bone Marrow
Appeal.
The money helped to fund the creation of bone
marrow transplant units in Glasgow saving the lives of hundreds of
children.
The original challenge was six rounds and two
holes to round it up to 110 but the duo ended up playing the last four
holes instead of just two.
On Friday 21st June 2024 and now
aged 70, Archie will attempt to repeat the challenge though this time
with a number of different partners – his son, friends and other club
members.
The date is the first anniversary of his late
father-in-law’s admission to Strathcarron Hospice. Peter Buchanan Young
was a former Director of Direct Works for Falkirk Council and a former
burgh surveyor of Denny & Dunipace Town Council. Bro. Mackay’s
family say he received the most compassionate end of life care from the
dedicated team at Strathcarron and the golf marathon challenge is the
family’s way of saying thanks.
Archie said: “My target in 1984 was £2000 and
we more than doubled it. My target, 40 years on and with arthritis in my
right knee, is to be able to walk at the end!
“I hope friends, relatives, fellow golfers
around the world and kindred spirits everywhere will support me. 10p per
hole is £11 but you can donate as much as you want. Every penny raised
will go straight to Strathcarron Hospice via the link to their funding
page.
“And if you pay tax you can boost your donation
through Gift Aid. Thanks in anticipation of your support.”
